Former British Heavyweight boxer Gary Mason died yesterday after a road accident in Wallington, South London.
The accident happened around 6.15am, Mason was riding his cycle when he was hit by a van. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An unnamed man has been charged with careless driving and bailed until March pending further inquires.
As a professional, Mason fought 38 times between 1984 and 1994, with 37 wins. His only defeat was to Lennox Lewis at the Wembley arena. He was British champion from January 1989 to March 1991.
Many of boxings greats including Frank Bruno and promoter Frank Maloney have all expressed their sorrow at the passing of someone who was hailed as 'One of the nice guys of boxing'.
Gary was the cousin of some good friends of mine and someone who I met on a few occasions and was a very kool individual. I'd like to send my condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
