R.I.P. Smiley Culture And Nate Dogg
80's Reggae star Smiley Culture (real name David Emmanuel), has died in suspicious circumstances during a police raid on his home.
Smiley was a British Reggae singer and DJ. During the 80's he released two of the most successful crossover songs,'Cockney Translation' and 'Police Officer'
Born and raised in South London, to a Jamaican father and South American mother, Emmanuel was schooled in Tulse Hill. The MC also worked with Saxon Soundsystem and also worked with some the UK's leading Reggae artists including Maxi Priest, Tippa Irie and Papa Levi.
Signed to the London based reggae record label, Fashion Records, his first single 'Cockney Translation' was a Jamaican’s guide to the East End slang words/terms. His next single, 'Police Officer' was a Top 20 hit and earned Emmanuel two appearances on BBC Television’s flagship music programme, Top of the Pops.
R.I.P. Smiley.
West Coast singer/rapper Nate Dogg, real name Nathaniel D. Hale, sadly passed away on Tuesday night. The cause of death is not yet known, but the hook master did suffer from two strokes in 2007 and 2008.
Nate Dogg was part of the Death Row Records empire and provided the hook for some of our favourite songs, mine being 'Ain't No Fun (If the homies can't have none)' and probably his biggest hit, 'Regulate' with Warren G.
The artist worked with some of the industry's finest including- Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, Fabolous, Ludacris and Eminem. If Nate was on the hook, it was destined to be a hit!
The singer/rapper also released a self-titled album in 2008.
