Last night the 2011 MOBO Awards took place in Glasgow! Everyone who... could afford a train or plane ticket was there and revellers turned out in their thousands to enjoy the night.
The show was hosted by Alesha Dixon and Jason Derulo (we'll come back to him later...) and featured performances from Jessie J, Tincht Stryder, \dappy, Dionne Broomfield, Alexis Jordan and.... oh yeah, Jason Derulo.
The show which went out 'Live' on BBC3 (meaning recorded live and played that way) and in my opinion should really have been edited beforehand because there were constant moments of pausing and dead air between nomination announcements and performances. Now let me first say first off that I'm not here to slate the show because I did find it entertaining , BUT it didn't really do itself any favours with the hardcore/non-Capital FM listeners.
I was part of a running commentary with people on Twitter throughout the show and we all kind of had the same opinion on who REALLY decides who wins because it seemed to me that it was based on who appeals to a more mainstream audience rather than those who actually work hard over a long period of time and have to fight their way through or dilute their style a lil' bit! I realise that 'urban' music is now 'pop' music, but there was some unworthy losers in some categories and also winners that made you scratch your head.
It seems that since it's beginning the show continues to be watered down and less and less black, but then you can raise the point that a large majority of black people can moan about what they see as wrong-doings but they still won't make the effort to actually vote!
Anyhoo, this is not a race issue, let's be glad we still have a music awards show in the UK.
Now, on to some things that I noticed/didn't like-
- Why was Alesha not given any wardrobe changes? We know she has swagg, why was this not shown??? If it wasn't in the budget surely she had a few outfits from Strictly she could have brought herself!
- Jason Derulo... Where to begin! Missing his cues, not being able to follow the tele-prompter, messing up people's names, having no chemistry with Alesha and not looking in to the right camera and that iron on beard! Please do not invite him back next year...
- Wretch 32 winning NOTHING!!! It was like Craig David and Tinchy all over again
- Mavado not winning Best Reggae Artist????
- Were all the stylists on strike???
All in all I would give the show 6 out 10, I consciously went out of my way to view it this year, which I didn't in 2010. Didn't care much for Dappy and Tinchy backstage and I think the criticism being directed towards Jessie J is not warranted as she worked very hard over the last year and you can clearly see she respects the craft.
My highlight has to be seeing my boy singing and dancing to Boyz II Men 'End Of The Road' at the end of the show!
I really think that the heads of the show need to think about a name change because it has become a bit misleading!
